Grease Is The Word

Grease is my favourite movie of all time. From watching it as a tot to re-watching it as a twenty-something, every time it fills me with pure joy. It is the definition of a feel good movie. Sure, it's got a questionable moral - changing your entire personality and appearance for a guy, but I choose to look past that. Hey, the pros outweigh the cons.
To celebrate my love for the timeless movie, here are my reasons why Grease is the greatest film... ever.
The Music
Starting the list with an obvious point; the music in Grease is SPOT ON. Every song is a bop, and are guaranteed to stay in your head for weeks after. From the slow and heart-wrenching Hopelessly Devoted To You to the just plain ridiculous We Go Together, every song has a special place in my heart. My personal favourite however is Worst Things I Could Do, and has long been on my kareoke song list.
The Clothes
I have always loved 50's styles; Petticoats, Neckties, Pencil Skirts and perfectly pinned hair. Grease has the 50's look nailed. There are so many iconic style moments in the film, with the most memorable one being Sandy's sexy reveal at the end of the film. Olivia Newton-John was so dedicated to this getting this look right that she was sewn into those leather pants! Patty Simcox's prom dress is my favourite look of the movie: girly and fluffy beautifulness.
Endless Catchphrase
Both my aunty and I pride ourselves on our ability to recite the whole movie word for word. The script is jam packed full of CLASSIC one-liners. From 'Hickey from Kenickie' to 'Tell me about it...Stud', Grease has so many iconic moments that go down in movie history.
The Dance Scene
Arguably the best scene in the whole movie, the Dance Scene is iconic. There is something so simply brilliant about a big dance number. As a die-hard Grease fan I naturally have memorised Sandy's and Danny's dance solo... I even won a dance contest in Flares dancing along to the Hand Jive (Proudest moment of my life? Quite possibly...)
It covers serious topics...
Despite it's bright colours and it's need to break out into song every 5 minutes, Grease actually covers serious subjects. Teen Pregnancy, Gangs and Dangerous Driving are all mentioned, making Grease a relatable teen hit. Let's not forget the Pervert Vince Fontaine grooming Marty at the school dance!
The extras are just as good as the main cast
This is probably something you will only notice if you have watched the film as many times as I have, but it is PACKED full of incredible extras. In all the big scenes the extras are super in the moment, not letting their characters drop once. In the dance scene alone there are hundreds of little funny moments that happen away from the main action. Big shout out to my fave extra who is just sat on a bench during the slow bit of Summer Nights - once you notice him, you will never unsee him.
It's just plain ridiculous
Part of enjoying Grease is understanding that it is crazy. What are the chances that Danny and Sandy would end up at the same school? What school has a full on fair on the last day? AND WHY DOES THE CAR FLY??? My husband pointed out all the stupid parts when we watched it together and then I realised it's what makes me love it so much.
Grease will forever be my favourite movie, and I will always be the first on the dancefloor when the Grease-Megamix is played. It has contributed to who I am today, and I can't wait till I have kids of my own to force it upon them as the greatest movie ever.
Till next time,
Stay Golden x
