Rediscovering my teenage iPod

So last year the headphone jack on my iPod classic decided to die. No matter what headphones I used, music would only play out of one ear. I have an 160GB Ipod, they don't even make them anymore! I went to the Apple Store to see what they could do and they said it would cost £200 to get it fixed. Now, I'm no cheap skate by any means, but I thought that was ridiculous.


In my temper I threw the iPod into a drawer, and forgot about it. In a very music snob way, I refused to listen to my music through one headphone.


Whilst moving to Kettering, I found the iPod. I'm a year older now and less bothered about the one headphone issue. So I decided to take it with me and have a listen back to the songs that I adored whilst in college.

The songs on it bring back so many memories, good and bad. Isn't it funny how you can remember all the lyrics to songs that you haven't listened to for years, yet you can't remember where you put your phone down five minutes ago.


Here is my collection of the songs and albums on my iPod that will always have a place in my heart.


My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade



What can I say about this album... Every emo kid in the noughties will probably back me up on how monumental this album was, or at least felt. I remember getting a CD player for Christmas 2006, along with this CD. I sat in the kitchen on my own and listened to the album from start to finish. As a year 7 girl, with a dramatic personality and a love for Rock and Alternative music The Black Parade blew my mind. It was so theatrical and macabre, and full of raw emotion. The album changed the way I looked at rock music, understanding that it's not just bout loud guitars and drums, but the storytelling too.

Baz Luhrmann - Everybodys free (to wear sunscreen)



I nicked this song from my best friends brothers iTunes - most of the music on my iPod is nabbed off other people. I didn't know the song - just recognised Baz Luhrmann as he guy who directed Romeo and Juliet. When I got round to listening to it, I was instantly inspired by the lyrics. They are so uplifting and beautifully comical. Whenever I've faced tough decisions, or just having a 'down day', this is my go to song.

Enter Shikari - Juggernaughts



This song was my first experience of Enter Shikari and I fell in love with them instantly. I'd always been interested in music that has a political standpoint and the album Common Dreads satisfied that need perfectly. As I've grown older, Enter Shikari have always stayed with me, and are guaranteed to get me moving when they come on at a house party.

Jack Johnson- Inbetween Dreams



This album is quite possibly my favourite album of all time. I've listened to it in so many places, that it now transports me somewhere different every time I listen to it. Skiing with school in 2010, driving through the Lake District in my godfathers campervan, laying on the beach in Kos on our first couples holiday. The album is a treat from start to finish. It is so calming to listen to, and is always something I put on when I need cheering up. The album is so important to me that we are using one of the songs in our wedding ceremony.

FAVE TRACK- Banana Pancakes


Lily Allen - Alright, Still


This was one of the first albums I owned, and I'm pretty sure it helped build me into the feminist I am today (along with the Spice Girls). Lily Allen was the epitome of Girl Power to me, with her prom style summer dresses, Nike Air trainers and BMX. Her lyrics on the album are so fun and tongue in cheek, and I spent many a car journey with my Dad shouting and laughing along to them. She is also to blame for introducing me to the word c***. Tut Tut, naughty Lily.

FAVE TRACK- Knock 'Em Out


Nicki Minaj - Last Chance (ft Natasha Bedingfield)



You're probably thinking, how does Nicki Minaj fit in with all the other artists on this list. She sticks out like a sore thumb. However, whilst in college I had a bit of an obsession with her, especially this song. I felt like such a bad ass when walking through Fleetwood listening to her album Pink Friday, and when I mastered all the lyrics to this song I felt untouchable. I've always been a bit of a Natasha Bedingfield fan too, and her vocals made this song more relatable to someone who didn't listen to that much rap music at the time.

FAVE LYRIC - 'Don't you do like the Pope and cross me'


Paramore - Riot


You may have noticed by now, I love strong, independent women. And, Hayley Williams is probably my all-time fave. The Riot album for me was the perfect transition from Avril Lavigne's music. It had the same angsty feel to it, yet it seemed more grown up. Avril was still a sk8tr girl, whereas Hayley was a woman. I used to lie in bed, with my headphones on, and mime along to the whole album, wishing my mum would let me die my hair bright orange, and that I had a cooler wardrobe.
